DESCRIPTION:
This figure shows a similar view to Main text Figure 5, modified to additionally show 15mm FWHM surface-based smoothing for MSMAll (top) and FreeSurfer (bottom). Note that the surface-based areal uncertainty after 15mm FWHM smoothing looks similar to unsmoothed volume-based analysis uncertainty (cf. Figure S5 above), showing that studies using large surface-based smoothing kernels substantially degrade their area localization (see also Main Text Figure 8 and Supplementary Table S1). Note that large smoothing on the surface also causes the corners of areas to become rounded off, which while undesirable, is less problematic than the volume-based “smoothing movement” effect shown below in Figure S7.
